MD Bob was the 1974 Rothman's European F5000 champion and went on to drive F1s for BRM in 1975 and Lotus in 1976 but neither of these teams were able to provide him with a competitive car and he eventually retired from racing in 1985 to concentrate on his business interests. Nevertheless, Bob's recent experience brought his driving years flooding back. “I'd forgotten how much I enjoyed it,” says a wistful Bob having driven round the circuit several times in the ex-Peter Gethin 1970 championship-winning McClaren M10B, a Trojan T101 (like the one he drove for Alan McKechnie in the 1973 F5000 series) and a 1973 Lola T330, the forerunner to his title-winning T332 and the car Bob remembers most fondly.
